Three ways to look up a paint color
By name or paint code. Codes match with or without their spaces and prefixes, so SW6244, SW 6244 and 6244 all find the same paint. Names are matched across all 6 brands at once, which is the quick way to see how many manufacturers sell something called Swiss Coffee.
By hex or RGB value. Paste a color value and every paint in the catalog is ranked by CIEDE2000 difference from it, closest first - a perceptual ranking, not a numeric one. This is the hex-code-to-paint conversion people usually want: give it a value from a photo, a brand guide or a color picker, and get back the real paints nearest to it. A hex is a screen instruction rather than a paint, so treat the top results as a shortlist to sample, not an answer to buy on.
By family, undertone or LRV. The filters work on their own or on top of a ranking, so "the closest warm neutral above LRV 60" is a single query. How do you look up a paint color by its code?
Type the code into the search box above. Spacing, case and punctuation are ignored, so SW 6244, sw6244 and SW-6244 all reach the same color, and the 12,004 colors here cover 6 manufacturers, so a code from any of them resolves without picking a brand first.
How do you find the paint color closest to a hex code?
Paste the hex value - #D7CEC8, d7cec8 or rgb(215, 206, 200) - into the color field. Every paint in the catalog is converted to CIE L*a*b* and ranked by CIEDE2000 difference from your value, closest first. Comparing hex numbers directly does not work: equal numeric gaps look obvious in a pale grey and invisible in a deep navy, which is the reason for the Lab conversion.
Can a hex code be matched to paint exactly?
Rarely. 12,004 paint colors cannot cover 16.7 million hex values, so a hex lookup returns the nearest real paint rather than an exact one. Read the ΔE00 figure on the result: under 1.0 the difference is invisible side by side, 1–2 is very close, and above 4 you will see it on a wall.
Are paint color codes the same across brands?
No. Each manufacturer numbers its own range independently, so the same code at two brands is two unrelated colors, and there is no central registry that maps between them. Matching across brands is done by measured color difference, which is what the cross-brand matches on each color do.
How do you find a paint color for a specific LRV?
Set an LRV range in the filters. Light Reflectance Value is the percentage of light a color reflects, so filtering to 60–100 returns the colors that will keep a dark room bright, and the filter combines with a family, an undertone and a hex ranking at the same time.
Can a paint color be identified from a photo?
Not here, and not reliably anywhere. A photograph records the room's light and the camera's white balance along with the paint, so the hex it yields is not the paint's own color. Read the code off the tin or the back of the chip, or start from a hex value you already trust.
